Hold a key,\n speak your prompt, and the text appears in the chat input, ready to review and send.\n Transcription runs fully on your computer with a bundled Whisper engine, and a small speech\n model is included, so it works right after installation, with no download and no account.\n That makes it a good fit for locked-down corporate laptops.\n
\n\n
Highlights
\n
\n
Works out of the box. The Whisper engine and the Tiny model are part of the plugin. Install it, pick your microphone and start speaking.
\n
Offline and private. Your voice is transcribed on your machine and never uploaded.
\n
Built for Copilot Chat. Speak long, detailed prompts instead of typing them. The text is placed straight into the Copilot Chat input for you to read and edit, even if your cursor is still in the editor. By default nothing is sent until you send it.
\n
Windows and Linux. Supports Windows 10/11 and Linux, both 64-bit (x64). Verified on Ubuntu Linux with PipeWire and Windows 11.
\n
\n\n
Features
\n
\n
Push-to-talk or tap-to-start/stop. Hold the shortcut to speak, or tap once to start and again to stop. The default shortcut is
Alt+Shift+Z
, and you can change it in Settings | Keymap.
\n
Five speech models to choose from. Start with the bundled one, and download a more accurate model if you want it:\n
\n
Tiny (English, 75 MB): bundled, the fastest, and the least accurate.
\n
Base (English, 142 MB): quick and fairly accurate.
\n
Small (English, 466 MB): the best balance, recommended for most people.
\n
Small (multilingual, 466 MB): balanced accuracy for other languages.
\n
Large v3 Turbo (multilingual, about 1.6 GB): the most accurate, and slower.
\n
\n
\n
Language selection. Choose the language you speak when a multilingual model is active. English-only models don't need it, and the setting tells you why it is unavailable.
\n
CPU or GPU. Automatic mode picks what works on your machine. You can also choose CPU only or GPU (Vulkan), and set the number of CPU threads to balance speed and load. If the GPU fails, the plugin remembers and falls back to the CPU on the next utterance instead of crashing and restarting.
\n
Microphone test. Pick your input device and check it with a live level meter before you start dictating.
\n
Opt-in keep-ready microphone. Keep the capture line open between clips (off by default) so the next clip starts without re-opening the microphone.
\n
Status bar indicator. The dictation phase — idle, recording, transcribing — is shown in the status bar with an icon and text, in Light, Dark and High Contrast.
\n
Optional auto-send. Off by default, so you always get a chance to check the text first.
\n
Easy model management. Downloads run in the background with a progress bar and a cancel button, and the bundled model can be restored in one click if you delete it.
\n
Shared data folder. The runtime and the models (bundled and downloaded) live in one folder shared by all your IDEs —
%LOCALAPPDATA%\\VoicePrompt
on Windows,
~/.local/share/voice-prompt
on Linux — instead of a per-IDE copy. Existing installations migrate automatically, and the location can be overridden with the
VOICE_PROMPT_HOME
environment variable.
\n
\n\n
Getting started
\n
\n
Install the plugin and open Settings | Tools | Voice Prompt.
\n
Choose your microphone and press Test to check the level.
\n
Open Copilot Chat.
\n
Hold
Alt+Shift+Z
(the default shortcut), speak, and release. Check the text, then send it as usual.
\n
\n
\n The bundled Tiny model is selected at first. If you want better accuracy, open the settings and\n download another model.\n
\n\n
Offline use and downloads
\n
\n Dictation with the bundled model needs no internet connection at all. Internet access is only used\n if you choose to download one of the larger models from the settings page, and after the download that\n model also works offline. Larger models come from a pinned commit of the whisper.cpp repository on\n Hugging Face (ggerganov/whisper.cpp) and are verified against SHA-256 checksums bundled with the\n plugin — a download without a known checksum is refused before it starts, and an interrupted download\n keeps its progress and resumes when you retry. If your network\n blocks huggingface.co, the bundled Tiny model still works.\n
\n\n
What stays on your computer, and what doesn't
\n
\n Your voice audio is transcribed locally and is never uploaded. When you send the resulting\n text to Copilot Chat, it is handled by GitHub Copilot under GitHub's own terms and privacy\n policy, just like anything you type into the chat. This plugin does not change that.\n
\n\n
Requirements
\n
\n
Windows 10/11 or Linux, 64-bit (x64) only. macOS, ARM and 32-bit systems are not supported. On Linux, glibc 2.34 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12+, Fedora 36+) and a GCC 12-era libstdc++.
\n
IntelliJ IDEA 2024.2 or later, with the GitHub Copilot plugin installed and signed in. Dictation into Copilot Chat was tested with Copilot plugin version 1.19.0-252. Voice Prompt was tested with IntelliJ IDEA. It uses only the common IntelliJ Platform, so it should also work in other IntelliJ-based IDEs that run the Copilot plugin, but those have not been tested.
\n
An active GitHub Copilot subscription. It is not included with this plugin.
\n
A working microphone. On Linux, the microphone must be available through your system's audio setup. Tested with PipeWire.
\n
For GPU mode: a Vulkan-capable graphics card and driver. If none is found, the plugin falls back to the CPU.
\n
\n\n
Good to know
\n
\n Transcription runs on your computer, so speed depends on your hardware and the model you choose.\n Larger models are more accurate but slower. English-only models are the quickest for English speech\n but can't transcribe other languages. Inserting text relies on the Copilot Chat input, so a future update\n to the Copilot plugin could change how it behaves.\n
\n\n
\n \n This plugin is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by\n GitHub, Inc., Microsoft, OpenAI or JetBrains. GitHub and GitHub Copilot are trademarks of GitHub, Inc.\n Whisper is a speech recognition model released by OpenAI.
